Nothing else in the manuscript has changed, but I wanted to shuffle the beginning around more, get right into Stephanie’s world before we notice LP’s.
The first line is staying, the rest is a first draft.
Here it is. Tell me what you think in the comments please, if you have time.
New intro
It was a cryogenic Tuesday morning and the universe had just begun to die.
Stephanie peeled herself from her bedsheets, slowly wrestling the quilt off her legs, straightening herself out. She closed her eyes tight against the death-ray slipping through the half-closed curtains, breathed in heavily through her nose, picked up the smell of cherry vodka and kebab and something else, something cold and massive.
She had left the window open.
Now, stumbling to her feet, kicking over a single black boot, Stephanie ambled to the window and shut it. The trees beyond the back garden had a fine coating of frost on their branches. Stephanie felt so cold that it was not hard to imagine ice crystals forming loose in the open air of her bedroom, humming and chiming their way into existence, crushing her. She saw waves and flashes of light blues and whites, a stinging sensation in her nose. By now the strongest smell was the onions, abandoned in their polyethylene coffin. Stephanie dragged her hands across her face, winced, shook her head.
Bad idea. Hangover. Need to text Emma.
She sat back down, noticing now that she had not put her pyjamas on the night before, and had instead slept in what she went out in, jeans and a t-shirt. She pawed around for her phone, eventually finding it secluded under her pillow, and wiped the garlic mayonnaise from its screen.
